Company's Solutions

GaitBetter is a universal VR add-on to existing treadmills. By adding cognitive engagement to gait training, GaitBetter enables personalized motor-cognitive intervention that was shown to double (and more) traditional outcomes.

A single camera is placed in front of any treadmill and tracks the trainee's foot movement during locomotion. These movements are projected onto a simulation displayed on a front screen placed in front of the treadmill. The trainee is walking on the treadmill and sees his own two feet movements in a virtual simulation representing real-life challenges. The training involves negotiating virtual obstacles while attending to cognitive demands. An AI-based algorithm automatically adjusts the training protocol to the individual skills and capabilities. The training is gamified, leading to a significant increase in motivation and adherence. The system tracks patient progression and allows therapists and physicians to track patient improvement over time, focus on specific deficits, and adjust the training protocol to maximize outcomes.

In more than 8 clinical studies, 3 large RCTs, 21 peer-reviewed publications, and more than 5,000 patients to date the GaitBetter technology has proven its superiority over existing solutions, leading to as high as 70% reduction in falls, improved motor and cognitive skills and better quality of life.

Prominent Case Study

The collaboration

GaitBetter was selected by the Israel Ministry of Health to deliver a pilot with Maccabi Health Services, Israel’s second-largest HMO, to reduce falls in older adults enhance care, and help lower associated costs.

GaitBetter’s unique evidence-based motor-cognitive VR solution for gait rehabilitation and fall prevention was chosen to help serve patients identified at fall risk.

Method

200 older adults that were considered in the ‘medium-to high-risk’ category for falls, participated in the pilot. Patients participated in a 15-visit training program averaging 40 minutes per visit, for 6~7 weeks. This included multitasking exercises involving negotiating virtual obstacles, while attending to cognitive demands. Seven GaitBetter’s systems were added to existing treadmills in six clinics.

Results

Clinical
28% reduction in FES (Fall Efficacy Scale)
19% reduction in TUG (Timed Up and Go)
9% improvement in BBS (Berg Balance Scale)

Financial
71% reduction in the number of falls
46% reduction in emergency room visits
34% reduction in hospitalization days

Summary

Following the success of the pilot program, Maccabi has now rolled GaitBetter to dozens of sites throughout the
country, and GaitBetter was selected to also serve the largest HMO provider in Israel, Clalit Health Services.
